Older Drivers May Be to Blame, Not Toyota

Toyota malfeasance may actually be 'driver errors' by senior citizens

(Newser) – The knock against Toyota goes something like this: Greedy executives ignored evidence of serious acceleration problems, putting profit ahead of their customers' lives. "Maybe so, but I doubt it," writes Megan McArdle. Building on the work of Ted Frank at the Washington Examiner, she took a closer look at the 56 reported accidents: Most of the drivers were old, and most of the accidents occurred while parking, leaving a parking spot, or in stop-and-go traffic—when it's not that hard to hit the wrong pedal.

"When you look at these incidents all together, it's pretty clear why Toyota didn't investigate this 'overwhelming evidence' of a problem," writes McArdle at the Atlantic. "They look a lot like typical cases of driver error. I don't know that all of them are. But I do know that however advanced Toyota's electronics are, they're not yet clever enough to be able to pick on senior citizens."

It likes this. If you visit the NHSTA web site you find that all auto manufacturers have deaths related to their products every year for various reasons. If you check past records for auto companies over several years you will find that Toyota has had less total deaths relates to their products than most all auto manufactures. My elderly step father has crashed his Toyota Camry twice. Both times were his fault. Although elderly people crash cars all the time. The risk for a crash by an elderly person is much higher. They just don't have the reaction time or quick thinking that younger drivers have. Check the stats. Toyota is doing as much as they can to resolve this problem and restore confidence.
It now really comes down to nothing but greed and politics, and our media loves this kind of stuff. What a perfect time for the big 3 and other manufactures of cars. Here are a few scenarios: GREED - The current situation provides the ultimate opportunities for our law suit society and many are jumping on the band wagon and the lawyers are loving it. Toyota has a lot of money and they all want a piece. POLITICS - Destroying the credibilty of the main cooperation that has absorbed the vast majority of lost sales by the big 3 is good for the business. If you make them look completely bad it is only going to make sales increase for the other guy. I wonder if any of the complaints come from people that have connections to the big 3 whether it be employee, family member, or other associates more directly related to the competing company.
I work for another auto manufacturer that is not the big 3 or Toyota. Toyota has and does provide employment for hundred of thousands of americans. They pump billions of dollars into the U.S. economy. This is no excuse for producing a product that has potential safety risks. It all comes down to how you truly feel and respond to this entire situation. Has Toyota always provided the products that many Americans have wanted to buy for so many years. Hasn't Toyota been on top for safety standards that all Americans insist upon?
Yes, obviously their have been some issues that they have admitted to and are feveriously working to fix, but in the mean time questionable owners, lawyers, politicians, and others are getting rich. Don't we always question the integrity of those mentioned in the previous sentence. The sad part is that our media feeds this type of thing and there are those of poor integrity that eat it up.
Check the past accident and safety performance of some of the other car manufacturers and then make your judgement.

Well, it should be investigated. Easily, an ambulence chaser could find a way to clear a client. A lot of us have old drivers in our families who scare the pants off of us---young drivers too.
