(Newser) – Google is scrambling for a piece of the action as more and more people use their TVs to access web content. The search giant has teamed up with Intel and Sony to build a new generation of TVs and set-top boxes using its Chrome browser and Android cell phone system, the New York Times reports.

The project has been under way for several months and products should be ready by this summer, insiders say. The company plans to open its television software up to developers in the hopes of creating specific TV apps to give it the edge in a crowded market. "Google wants to be everywhere the Internet is so they can put ads there," one insider says.
