(Newser) – Barack Obama and Dmitri Medvedev today agreed to trim their nuclear arsenals to the lowest level in 50 years, reports the New York Times. If ratified, the treaty would limit each country to 1,500 strategic warheads. The Treaty of Moscow, signed in 2002, limited them to 2000 apiece. Each nation would also be limited to 800 total land-, air- and sea-based launchers, down from 1,600 permitted by a treaty signed in 1991.

Though the leaders did not agree on American plans to build an anti-missile shield in Europe, the accord is seen as good news for US-Russia relations, strained since the war between Russia and Georgia in the summer of 2008.

The Wall Street Journal is right, saying: "The Obama administration (...) makes only modest changes to U.S. nuclear forces, leaving intact the longstanding U.S. threat to use nuclear weapons first, even against non-nuclear nations."

The Book of Revelation points out that the nuclear weapons will be used on a large scale during WWIII (6:4).

What is a realistic scenario for World War III? The Bible says: "At the appointed time [the king of the north = Russia] will return back [will regain the influence, which it lost after the break-up of the Soviet Union] and come into the south [many indicate that this might be Georgia], but it will not be as the former [1921] or as the latter [2008]. For the dwellers of coastlands of Kittim [the West] will come against him, and he will be humbled, and will return." (Daniel 11:29,30a)
"But ships will come from the direction of Kittim [US Navy], troubling Asshur [Russia] and troubling Eber [inhabiting on the other side the Euphrates]." (Numbers 24:24a, BBE)

However, it will be neither the great tribulation nor "the end of the world" (Armageddon). As Jesus foretold, that will be "the beginning of birth pains." (Mathew 24:7,8)
