Italian priest allegedly blames Jews for sex abuse scandal

(Newser) – Jews are fanning the flames of the Catholic Church's sex abuse scandal, an elderly Italian bishop has allegedly claimed—and American Jewish groups aren't too happy about it. A Catholic website quotes Giacomo Babini, 81, as saying the "powerful and refined" nature of criticism of the church suggests a "Zionist attack." The Jews "do not want the church, they are its natural enemies," Babini is quoted as saying. "Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers."

After the American Jewish Committee found the website and slammed Babini for "slanderous stereotypes, which sadly evoke the worst Christian and Nazi propaganda prior to WWII," the priest denied having made the comments. Babini has, however, been previously quoted on the same site accusing Jews of exploiting the Holocaust, and his alleged comments come after a series of recent statements by Catholic clergy calling the sex abuse scandal an anti-Catholic plot, the Guardian reports.

Wait, I remember hearing something about Jesus coming from a Jewish family, maybe even having a Jewish mother, which would mean that "Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God"....birthers??

(NEWSER) - Nearly a decade after a sexual abuse scandal erupted in the Archdiocese of Boston, Cardinal Sean O'Malley has released a list of 159 clerics accused of abusing children. The list was compiled using files that go back as far as 70 years, but the archdiocese has come under fire for omitting the names of 91 other priests, most of whom are now deceased, the Boston Globe reports. (NEWSER) - Good news: The Vatican returned to the black last year, after three straight years in the red. The Catholic Church pulled in $14.3 million, it said in its annual financial report today, while the Vatican city state made $30.6 million, fueled largely by ticket sales at the Vatican Museums. (NEWSER) - In a letter to bishops around the world, the Vatican today stated the importance of cooperating with police in reporting sexually abusive priests—but it does not make such reporting mandatory. The AP calls the suggestions "vague" and "nonbinding," and notes that they fall short of US norms. The Vatican has said such a binding rule would be problematic for priests working in countries with repressive regimes. (NEWSER) - The Vatican is scrambling to explain a secret 1997 edict rejecting an Irish Catholic Church proposal to report pedophile priests to the local authorities.
