(Newser) – Hugh Hefner has no use for dragons, flying meatballs or Na'vi. “What would people most like to see in 3D?” he muses. “Probably a naked lady.” That's why an upcoming issue of Playboy comes with those distinctive red-and-blue glasses, so its readers can get a more, shall we say, well-rounded view of the June centerfold, the AP reports.

That may not sound like Playboy 's typical brand of classy smut, but then, neither did the Marge Simpson centerfold from a few months ago. “In today's print environment, you have to create newsstand events,” explains the editorial director. Playboy needs to create something; circulation has fallen from 3.5 million in 2006 to just 1.5 million today. Event issues remind people of the value of printed porn, Hefner says. "You can hold it in your hands, save them, and as dad used to, put them under the mattress."
