FBI Raids Sites Near Boston in Terror Probe

Search warrants executed throughout Northeast

(Newser) – The FBI has raided a home in Watertown and a gas station in Brookline in connection with the attempted bombing in Times Square. Two people were taken into custody on immigration violations, the Boston Globe reports. An FBI spokeswoman says search warrants have been conducted at “several locations in the Northeast,” but emphasized that “there's no immediate threat to the public or active plot against the United States.”

The searches came about because of evidence uncovered in the Times Square investigation; MSNBC reports that authorities are tracking down cash connections to the plot. A witness who lives across the street from the Watertown home says she saw 20 agents burst into the place at 6am. “They all had their guns drawn, pointed at the house.” FBI agents were also spotted at a gas station in Brookline, but it's unclear if that raid was related.

(NEWSER) - A picture is starting to emerge of what drove Faisal Shahzad to attempt to detonate a bomb in Times Square. The 31-year-old father of two lost his home to foreclosure last summer, unable to parlay his Master's degree into success, the LA Times reports. Shortly thereafter he spent eight months in his native Pakistan, where he witnessed US drone strikes on Tehrik-i-Taliban leaders, sources tell the New York Post .
