Raleigh, NC, is the American city with the highest quality of life, according to a new survey by Portfolio magazine. With its low unemployment rate, quality housing stock, and rapid pace of growth, Raleigh beat out the other 66 largest metro areas in a comparison of 20 statistical measures of quality of life. The rest of the top five:

  1. The Washington, DC, area, tops in good jobs, big houses, and adults with college degrees.

  1. Minneapolis/St. Paul, with a relatively low poverty rate and a relatively high median household income.
  2. The Bridgeport-Stamford, Conn., area, which boasts a prosperous, stable population.
  3. Salt Lake City, where employed people come home to huge residences.
