Clearly, Charlie Sheen Is Invincible

How else could he get away with all his crazy?

(Newser) – What is the deal with Charlie Sheen? He can—and does—perform any number of “unforgivably stupid or impossibly sleazy” actions, the kind of things that would normally destroy a career…yet Charlie “does them about a dozen times a year and gets off clean,” writes Daniel O'Brien in Cracked. The only possible explanation? He’s invincible. Evidence:

  • He’s hit rock bottom: “Drug abuse and being an overall trainwreck” have sent many an actor into the “straight-to-DVD” market (see: Lindsay Lohan). But Sheen combined “the hookers, the drugs, the drinking” into “one slimy ball of sex funk,” and still stars in one of the most popular shows in America.

  • He has bizarre political views: Even someone who’s paid to be politically nonsensical (see: Glenn Beck) gets taken to task when he goes overboard. Yet Sheen can stage a fake interview between himself and the president about his belief that the 9/11 attacks were an inside job…and no one bats an eyelash.
  • He almost stabbed his wife on Christmas Day: “Far be it from me to speculate what would happen if any other celebrity did that but if, say, Zach Braff tried it, I imagine Scrubs would have been canceled a lot sooner.” What happened to Sheen? He got signed for two more seasons.

Why do we let Charlie Sheen get away with so much? Is this all excess goodwill leftover from Hot Shots? Are we forgiving Charlie Sheen all of his discretions on account of how awesome that movie was?
- Daniel O'Brien

Lindsay Lohan is a good comparison for this entry. She’s someone who had a perfectly decent career that she proceeded to chop up with a credit card and snort directly into her brain.
- Daniel O'Brien, pointing out how much more we hate Lilo than Charlie

Denise Richards, in fact, admitted that Sheen was a violent drug addict who regularly saw prostitutes. He was famously named as one of the clients of Heidi Fleiss’s brothel a few years back. (His response? 'I like sex and can afford it.')
- Daniel O'Brien

On paper, the only work he should be getting is in no-budget buddy cop movies alongside Tom Sizemore that go straight in the bargain bin at Blockbuster.
- Daniel O'Brien on Sheen

You might argue that Charlie Sheen can do whatever he wants because no one’s watching him or invested in his career at all. But people do watch him. People like, according to my figures, everyone.

- Daniel O'Brien

Tiger Woods lost sponsors simply because he liked putting his dick in things. David Letterman was protested because he, a comedian, made a vague joke about Sarah Palin’s daughter. Why does Charlie Sheen get to do whatever he wants? Doesn’t even CBS care?

This is a sign of our times. From the lowest criminal on the streets to the President of the U.S., we have decided that the laws on the books are bad and we can pick and chose the law's (we should call them suggestions) we want to follow. Charlie, has decided he can and will do and say what ever he wants, and expects not to be punished. It seems that our courts agree with him. Domestic violence is not a problem. I predict with an ego like Charlie's, he will end up like Phil Specter, killing someone eventually. Charlie will beat that one also.
