Teacher Faked Brain Cancer to Skip Work Cops say Leslie Herneisey lied about tumors for decade By Kate Seamons, Newser Staff Posted Jul 20, 2010 9:16 AM CDT 19 comments Comments Inside My Classroom (©knittymarie) (Newser) – What to do when you're too old to have mom write you a sick note to get out of school? Fake a really, really serious disease, apparently. Pennsylvania police say a special-education teacher has spent the last 9 years claiming she had an inoperable brain tumor in order to skip work, going so far as to request eight weeks off to undergo chemotherapy. Sympathetic colleagues even submitted an application to the Make-A-Wish Foundation on behalf of Leslie Herneisey, 51 (it was never granted due to, surprise, surprise, questions about her medical record). Her determined co-workers then raised money in order to send her to Disney World. But the school became suspicious when it realized Herneisey showed no symptoms. It then noticed her medical records weren't on official letterhead, and called her neurosurgeon, who confirmed he had never treated her. Herneisey, a—get a load of this—three-time nominee for Pennsylvania's teacher of the year, was arrested last week and charged with 12 felony counts of forgery, reports AolNews.
