Police won't have to check immigration status

(AP) - A federal judge today blocked the most controversial parts of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect, delivering a last-minute victory to opponents of the measure. The overall law will still take effect tomorrow, but without the provisions that angered opponents—including sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws. The judge also put on hold parts of the law that required immigrants to carry their papers at all times, and made it illegal for undocumented workers to solicit employment in public places. More»

Twin challenges are headed to federal court today

(NEWSER) - Supporters of Arizona’s controversial new immigration law head to court today, to defend it from both the Justice Department’s challenge and a separate lawsuit. Both cases will be heard by the same judge, Susan Bolton. It's unclear how she'll rule, according to CNN . Bolton heard yet another challenge to the law last week, in that case filed by an Arizona cop, but didn't make a ruling. More»

(NEWSER) - The Supreme Court has added another high-profile case to its slate: Justices will examine the Arizona immigration law that has sparked nationwide controversy, the AP reports. They'll rule on a US appeals court decision that barred portions of the law, including a measure requiring police investigating other matters to check a person's immigration status if they suspect he or she is an illegal immigrant. Election centered on the immigration law he championed

(NEWSER) - An underfunded upstart challenger appears to have knocked out Arizona Senate President Russell Pearce, in a historic recall election seen mainly as a referendum on the harsh immigration law Pearce championed. While the results aren’t yet official, with all districts reporting, challenger Jerry Lewis was up 52.4% to 45.4%, the Christian Science Monitor reports. She criticizes president and other foes of Arizona's immigration law

(NEWSER) - After Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer met with President Obama in the heat of last year's fight over the state's immigration law, she told reporters it was "cordial." She has a much different take in a book coming out next month, according to the Arizona Republic and AP :

• The meeting: "We sat down and started with some chitchat," she writes. "But after a few minutes, the president's tone got serious—and condescending." She also complains that Obama "lectured" her on SB 1070 that day and faults him for publicly mocking the law later.
