(Newser) – Archaeologists excavating the site of a 5th-century monastery on a Black Sea island claim they've found remains of John the Baptist. A reliquary found last week at the site on Sveti Ivan contains fragments of a skull, a hand, and a tooth. Archaeologists cite a Greek inscription on the reliquary referring to June 24, the date when Christians celebrate John the Baptist's birth, as evidence the remains are his.

The monastery on the island where the remains were found was dedicated to John the Baptist. The newly discovered reliquary is made of alabaster and is estimated to date from the middle of the 5th century, CNN reports. Further testing will be carried out on the relics, which are believed to have been donated to the monastery by the Byzantine Church.

Now if only someone would tell me how it happened that the relics "have been donated to the monastery by the Byzantine Church". Assuming it's a fifth-century monastery (is it really?), there would not have been a "Byzantine" church to speak of. This said, saints' relics (both real and those of questionable provenance) were ubiquitous during the Byzantine period, and a vague inscription is certainly not enough to support the claim that these are actually the remains of John the Baptist.

5th Century? Not likely the remains are authentic, or even that they might even date to the 1st century. Not impossible, but not likely.

As the historian Stephen Henry Roberts (1901-71) once said: “I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
