Johnson to Run Despite Brain Hemorrhage

Posted Oct 19, 07 11:58 PM CDT in US Politics

(Newser) – A brain hemorrhage won't stop South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson from seeking reelection, he said yesterday. He is still in therapy and gets around in a motorized wheelchair, but claims he is ready to run. "It is clear to my family, my doctors, and me that I am able to do the hard work required of a United States senator," he said.

Republicans are reluctant to run against Johnson after South Dakota closely followed his 9-month recovery from a life-threatening brain condition, the AP reports. Johnson returned to work last month, finding a $2 million campaign chest that colleagues had raised in his absence. Two Republicans, one a state lawmaker, have vowed to run against him.
