Electronic Arts, a leading video game manufacturer, has called on the gaming industry to set aside the incompatible gaming platforms now competing for consumer loyalty. Instead of choosing among rivals like Wii, Playstation, and Xbox, players should be able to use an "open gaming platform" for all games, EA argues. EA now produces games for more tha 14 different systems, BBC reports.
Gaming industry experts agree that dedicated consoles are not long for this world; in coming decades server-based games streamed to PCs are likely to eclipse the current gaming platforms. Companies such an Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo could become content producers and licensors. "There could be a Nintendo channel, a PlayStation channel and an Xbox channel on your set-top box," one expert added.
