David Westin is stepping down after 13 years at the helm of ABC News. Westin—currently the longest-serving US network news chief—has told staffers the time is right for him to move on, and he'll be leaving before the end of the year, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Westin, a corporate lawyer with no journalism experience, was a controversial choice for ABC News president in 1997, but he eventually won over the newsroom and led the division through turbulent times. He oversaw a 25% cut in ABC News staff over the last few years. His departure has sparked fresh speculation that ABC will be looking for a partner to help it stay competitive, with some insiders predicting an ABC-Bloomberg deal.
