(AP) - Barack and Michelle Obama say their young daughters will still have to do chores in the White House and won't get out of doing homework just because they're the president's children. In an interview with Barbara Walters airing tonight, the Obamas said Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10, will have lives as normal as possible. That means helping out around the house. More »

Despite Walters' entreaties, president-elect wants 'big rambunctious' canine

(Newser) - Barack Obama doesn't want a “girly dog” that just “sits in your lap and things,” he tells Barbara Walters in an interview set to air tonight, dismissing her unabashed lobbying for a White House pup similar to her sweet Havanese, Cha Cha Cha. “We're going to have a big rambunctious dog,” he said, as an unimpressed Michelle reminded him that “we have a houseful of girls,” reports Politico. GLOSSIES

Obama Girls Join Exclusive White House Sorority

If predecessors are any sign, Malia and Sasha are in for 'a helluva good time'

(Newser) - If Malia Obama sneaks a boy into the White House, it won’t be an action without precedent. The generations of girls who occupied what Margaret Truman billed “the Great White Jail” form a sort of underground society, Lauren Collins writes in the New Yorker . The Johnson sisters, for example, planted notes to welcome the Nixon ladies to the home where they surreptitiously entertained dates. More »

OPINION

 Fellow Black Woman
 Hails Michelle's Butt

Obama's 'statuesque' figure celebrates a long 'vilified' feature

(Newser) - Among the top qualities Michelle Obama brings to the White House is a “class-A boo-tay,” Erin Aubry Kaplan writes in Salon, hailing an era in which black women (like herself) no longer have to cover up their, er, assets. Too occupied with her words during the campaign, Kaplan “hardly looked south” to notice Michelle’s curves: “Talk about a power base.” More »

 Hypoallergenic Dog Is Tall Tail:
 Allergists to Obama

It's the dander, not the hair, that usually causes problems; steps recommended

(Newser) - Barack Obama plans to acquire a hypoallergenic dog because of daughter Malia’s allergies, but doctors have bad news, the AP reports. No canine is “truly ‘hypoallergenic,’” an allergists group says. “It is falsely believed that a dog that sheds less will not cause a reaction,” the group continued. In fact, allergens reside in dogs’ skin, urine, and saliva, and cannot be escaped. More »
