Shoulder injury dashes Russian's Olympic ambitions

(Newser) - The Olympics lost a bit of its star power today when Maria Sharapova announced that she won't be able to compete because of a shoulder injury, AFP reports. The 21-year-old Russian, ranked third in the world, also will miss the US Open in late August, the AP reports. “The doctors found two small tears in the tendons of my shoulder,” said a despondent Sharapova. (AP) - Venus and Serena Williams won in straight sets today to set up their third all-sister Wimbledon final and seventh Grand Slam championship matchup. Defending champion and four-time winner Venus beat Elena Dementieva 6-1, 7-6 (6-3), then two-time champ Serena overcame two rain delays and served 14 aces to down China's Zheng Jie 6-2, 7-6 (6-5). Surprise challenger upsets third seed in second round

(AP) - Former champion Maria Sharapova was ousted today in the second round at Wimbledon by 154th-ranked Alla Kudryavtseva. Kudryavtseva recovered an early break in the second set to beat the 2004 champion 6-2, 6-4; it was Sharapova's earliest exit from a Grand Slam event since her first full season on the circuit in 2003. Russia Denies Sharapova Bid to Carry Flag at Olympics

Coach concerned with tiring opening ceremony

(Newser) - Russian officials have denied Maria Sharapova’s request to carry her country’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Reuters reports. “I advised against” Sharpova’s wish to be a flag-bearer, the Russian tennis chief said. “We want her to be fresh, not tired, during her matches." (Newser) - Serena Williams screamed at herself, broke her racket and then finally finished off Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 for her fifth title at the Sony Ericsson Open today. Williams survived some tense moments in the last set and an improbable comeback by Jankovic, who trailed 5-3 in the second set. Clutch Shot Saves Roddick in Sony Opener

Star beats qualifier on amazing return; Davenport wins too

(Newser) - Andy Roddick was in big trouble in the opening round of the Sony Ericsson Open today when he pulled off a show-stopping shot to turn the match, reports the Associated Press. Roddick improved to 16-3 on the year with the 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Viktor Troicki in Key Biscayne. The qualifier was serving 4-5 in the final game when Roddick chased down a lob and hit a spinning crosscourt winner to bring the crowd to its feet. More »
