Customs broker Franz Felhaber has been giving different stories about how he came to have up to $20 million in decomposing dollars for years, the AP reports. 'We want it all back,' navy official says of $500M in booty from 19th-century wreck

(Newser) - Spain filed evidence today in support of its claim it is the rightful owner of a shipwreck loaded with $500 million in treasure discovered and looted by a US exploration firm, the AP reports. The Spanish government identifies the wreck, whose identity has been disputed over the past year, as the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, sunk by a British warship in 1804. More »

16th century wreck packed with coins, artifacts

(Newser) - Geologists have discovered a 16th-century Spanish ship with a cache of gold coins and priceless artifacts off the coast of Namibia. The stunning find was made last month by a crew seeking sites for coastal diamond mining operations, the South Africa Times reports. Work has been halted and the site secured for archaeologists, said a spokesman for the company, a DeBeers subsidiary. More »

Germans Find Hidden Nazi Gold

Gold pinpointed in cavern, stolen chamber of the czars could be nearby

(Newser) - Treasure hunters in Germany have announced they've found a secret stash of Nazi gold in an underground cavern and they believe it could be from the looted Amber Room of the Russian czars, Der Speigel reports. Instruments have detected what could be 2 tons of gold in the cavern near a town on the Czech border. The site was pinpointed using coordinates found among the belongings of a former Luftwaffe staffer who died recently. More »

(Newser) - A pot filled with mostly silver coins, buried for 1,000 years, was found recently by a father and son wielding a metal detector on a farm in Yorkshire, England.  Archeologosists theorize that the find by Dave and Andrew Whelan was booty from a Viking raid on a monastery. The hoard of coins is from England, Ireland, France, Russia and the Arabic-speaking world. More »
