(Newser) - Jim Sensenbrenner has won $1,000 in the Wisconsin lottery, marking his third win in the last 10 years. The GOP congressman had already won a $250,000 jackpot in a 1997 D.C. lottery and $1,000 in Wisconsin last spring. In the somewhat larger lottery, Sensenbrenner is an heir to the fortune of the Kimberly-Clark Corp., and is worth about $11.6 million. More »

Large, flightless bird found in parking lot

(Newser) - Consumer advocates have been pecking at Wal-Mart for exporting jobs overseas, but yesterday an overseas import returned the favor. A three-year-old emu named Myron wound up in the big-box store’s parking lot after being chased from a local farm by a coyote, the AP reports. The owner said he wasn’t surprised when police phoned around 6 a.m. and told him about his missing Australian bird. More »

Region ravaged by tornadoes, floods

(Newser) - The Midwest began massive storm cleanup yesterday as power was restored in southern Michigan after a series of tornadoes, and Ohio residents picked through homes ruined by floods. Hardest hit was Fenton, where at least 250 buildings in the Michigan town were destroyed when six tornadoes touched down in the state on Friday. More »

(Newser) - Heavy flooding continues to beset the Midwest, with the prospect of even more rain looming, the AP reports. In northern Illinois, 143,000 are still without power since storms hit Thursday. Rain has stopped, but flooding is still a danger for hundreds of thousands of people near swollen creeks and rivers; some rivers are approaching 50-year levels. More »

Midwestern Floods Takes 4 Lives

National Guardsmen rescue trapped drivers, state of emergency declared

(Newser) - Floodwaters have taken at least 4 lives today and plowed through bridges and roads in the MidWest, the AP reports. Dozens of National Guardsmen are braving severe storms as helicopters are rescuing people trapped by the flooding. Governors have declared states of emergency in Minnesota and Wisconsin and urged people to evacuate their homes in both states. More »

Twin Infants Among 6 Dead in Family  Massacre

Two-year-old is fighting for her life

(Newser) - Two infant twin boys are among six dead in a Wisconsin massacre that appears to be a murder-suicide. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports a two-year-old girl, found in a van outside the house, survived the slaughter after being shot in the chest. The children's father and a 19-year-old woman were among those killed. More »
