A North Carolina construction worker, his two sons and four other men in the state have been charged with plotting to carry out terror attacks abroad, the BBC reports. The men, all but one of whom are US citizens, conspired to carry out jihad attacks in countries including Jordan and Israel, say authorities.  Alleged ringleader Daniel Boyd, 39, is a convert to Islam who fought with the Afghan mujahedeen against the Soviets.

Boyd ran his own terror training and fundraising organization from his home in a quiet Raleigh-area neighborhood and stockpiled weapons in rural sites, prosecutors say. The arrests, made after a long FBI investigation, stunned those who knew the Boyds. "If he's a terrorist, he's the nicest terrorist I've ever met in my life," a neighbor told the News & Observer.
