(Newser) – Scenic drives, long walks with leaves crunching under your feet, hot apple cider ... there's nothing quite like autumn, and the spectacular foliage that comes with it. The US boasts the best displays of fall foliage, writes Christine Sarkis on SmarterTravel, but the rest of the world is certainly not lacking. She offers up the 10 best spots—see five in the gallery, or for the complete list, click here. Itching to travel? Click here for more travel coverage.

Vermont: You'll see red maple, pine cherry, and mountain ash, and more, from mid-September through October. Plan for lots of scenic drives (Route 100 is a good one), covered bridges, and hot cider.

Kyoto, Japan: Though known for cherry blossoms in the spring, the fall is also striking here. Sometimes the foliage is even lit at night. The term for leaf peeping? Momijigari, or red leaf hunting.

North Carolina: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway offer beautiful foliage from mid-October through early November. Don't feel like driving? Take a rafting trip!

Beijing, China: Smoke trees, maple, persimmon, and others make this the place to be between mid-October and mid-November. At Badaling National Park, see the leaves against a view of the Great Wall.

Colorado: September is the time to see the aspens in their peak color window, and the best way to do that is by taking a road trip or train trip through different parts of the state.

I live in a city of evergreens. It sucks. To see any 'fall' colour I have to go to the Botanic Gardens in May and walk up the hill to the conifers section, where I can sit under a forest of three very pretty trees and dream I'm somewhere else.
