(Newser) – The CIA has launched a flurry of drone attacks in Pakistan in an attempt to disrupt a huge suspected terrorist plot against European targets, according to the Wall Street Journal. While the exact nature of the plot is unclear, there have been multiple warnings in France, Germany, and the UK in recent days. “There are some pretty notable threat streams,” says one US military official.

The US has launched 20 drone attacks in September, the most in any month in the past six years. Many of those targeted the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani network, which has never been known to attempt attacks outside of South Asia. US officials wouldn’t say if those attacks were connected with the European threats. “Our operational tempo has been up for a while now,” said one official. “We have good information driving it, and—given the stakes involved—we hope to keep the pressure on.”
