Preschooler Suspended Over Potty Accidents

Zoe Rosso, 3, was removed for a month from her Arlington, Va., school

(Newser) – Didn’t think it was possible to get suspended from preschool? It is—and 3-year-old Zoe Rosso found herself booted for a full month, thanks to a few too many potty accidents. Rosso was removed from a Montessori preschool in Arlington, Va.—escorted out, along with her mother, by the principal no less—on Dec. 3, because she’d “had enough chances,” her mother tells the Washington Post. “That seemed absurd to me.” Zoe cleaned up after herself and changed her clothes after each accident, and a pediatrician said the toddler's development was perfectly normal.

Rosso had to continue paying the $835 monthly tuition while Zoe was out of school, and is now lobbying for the school board to change its policy. Experts say it’s normal for children Zoe’s age to have accidents even after being potty-trained, but a spokesperson says the county has required preschool students to be potty-trained for decades, and that children are removed after having eight accidents in a month. Rosso, however, says she wasn’t notified of the policy until just before Zoe was removed, when she was told that three more accidents could get her booted.

Why is this news? Preschool is not daycare, and it's perfectly normal for traditional preschools to require kids to be truly out of diapers. Did you know that there is different licensing and inspections for facilities that expect to change diapers and those that don't? So many preschools are also daycare centers that it's easy to forget that places like Montessori don't have potty training and diaper-changing as part of their routines.

Always the minority here, I must say, kids should stay home and be raised by their mother until it's time for school. Starting at 5 is safer mentally since they have already learned the basics for socializing and are more capable of being away from home. A worried or scared child will pee themselves more often and then will have to endure the horrible embarrassment, possibly altering their socializing capabilities. And don't forget, the human personality is developed before age 5 which means whoever is raising your child will mold their mannerisms and how they will act and react for life. So it better be you or you will get a copy of a babysitter or some 'pre school idiot'. Just sayin'.

Yes, those 3 year olds are real disciplinary problems when no one pays any attention to their needs!
