Movie Popcorn Gets Pass: Calorie Count Stays Hidden

Calorie counts to appear on restaurant menus next year: FDA

(Newser) – If you don't want to see how many calories are in your meal, you may have to start dining in bowling alleys and movie theaters. The FDA has released its proposal for adding calorie counts to menus next year, and places that don't serve food as their primary business have been exempted, reports the Los Angeles Times. Movie theater owners had lobbied hard for the exemption.

The new guidelines will apply to food-selling chains with more than 20 locations nationwide, including restaurants, vending machines, and grocery stores. The Center for Science in the Public Interest said theaters should have been included. “If a movie theater is going to serve up thousand-calorie tubs of popcorn, 400-calorie drinks and 400-calorie boxes of candy, the least they could do is tell you about it,” the group's nutrition policy director said.

A small movie popcorn with no added butter has 573 calories and 35 grams of fat. The medium-sized movie popcorn with no butter added has 951 calories and 58 grams of fat. Read More http://www.glamour.com/health-fitness/blogs/shape-up/2008/09/movie-popcorn-without-butter-9.html#ixzz1NpQQC1W1

California requires calorie counts on menus for all chain restaurants (more than 15 stores, I think). It has already had an impact on people. We do pay attention to calorie counts, and many people make healthier decisions based on that knowledge. What do you have against knowing?

Anyone who thinks that this food is low-fat and low-calorie is brain-dead (calorie counts are most effective for foods that people *assume* are healthy, like salads and wraps). In the case of movie theater popcorn, people don't eat it for nutrition -- they eat it for fun, as part of the movie-going experience. Even so, it's depressing to see yet another example of big money making public policy.
