FDA to Regulate E-Cigs

But just as tobacco products, not 'drug-delivery devices'

(Newser) – The FDA is getting in on the e-cigarette action, announcing today that it will regulate the smokeless smokes the same way it does other tobacco products. That's actually good news for e-cig purveyors, reports the AP, as they bypass tougher regulations they would have faced if labeled a drug-delivery device. That could all change, the FDA says, if the e-cigarettes are "marketed for therapeutic purposes"—ie, smoking cessation.

The presidents of two e-cig companies heralded the news, with NJOY's chief saying he was "very happy," while Blu Cigs' Jason Healy said the FDA rules will aid in "weeding out the shady companies." Currently, says Healy, "you can potentially sell snake oil." No timeline for the rules has been set.

I love mine. It's baffling that they won't allow them to be marketed as an quitting aid. I got mine and quit that same day with basically no effort. Been off tobacco for over three months now and I feel basically no danger of regressing. It might take me a while to quit the ecig, but frankly I feel so much better than I did, I'm not that worried about it. I can actually run now. Hell, my boners are even stronger than ever.

brawne: Nicotine isn't addictive? Check the 1988 surgeon general's report, or any of the other vast amount of research that's been done. Nicotine stimulates the release of dopamine within 10 seconds of being inhaled, as well as stimulating the central nervous system. It's highly addictive. Come back after doing a little research. These e-cigs are getting people off analogs, which is why the fed wants a piece of it. I'm glad to see them regulated as tobacco rather than drugs, but let's hold off jumping for joy until we see how the fed is going to tax them, and they will.
