(Newser) – Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian is hospitalized with a kidney problem and pneumonia, the Detroit Free Press reports. It’s the second time in a matter of weeks that the kidney ailment has led to hospitalization. “Last night things flared up and we took him in,” his lawyer said, though today the right-to-die proponent, 82, who was imprisoned on a second-degree murder conviction in 1999, sounded “a little bit better.” Kevorkian has also grappled with heart trouble and hepatitis C.

This fellow was crucified by the medical/industrial complex that wants to keep us alive at all costs...and I do mean all costs. As soon as the population is broke and generally uninsured you will see Health Care costs reduced to what the market will bear and will see people encouraged to end their lives with some dignity rather than have the last 12 months of their lives cost the government or industry 100K+ I know I'd rather leave a home or legacy to my family rather than get shaken down.

Without religious convictions (and the sense of entitlement that comes with them - because they're SOOOOO important for absolutely everyone, faithful or not), there would be Jack Kevorkians everywhere and none of them would be questioned. Some people deserve a quick, painless out. No one should have the right to tell them otherwise, let alone legislate your way into their deathbed.

I had a feeling at least one person would use this story as the "perfectly ironic" call-to-arms for Jack's death machine. Predictably pedestrian and proof that no one really cares about the details. Jack only worked with suffering people who had no hope for escape (whether it be recovery or natural death) and the assurance of agonizing pain for the rest of their lives. I don't know if I can agree with what he did or not, but I at least respect his story and his pursuit.
