(Newser) – The best overall diet is the DASH diet, US News & World Report says in new rankings—but if weight loss is your specific goal, go with Weight Watchers. So what's DASH? It stands for Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension and it's generally meant for adults looking to curb high blood pressure. It's big on "whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat and nonfat dairy foods, lean proteins, nuts and limited amounts of fats and sweets," explains the Los Angeles Times, which writes about it for a different reason: A new study suggests it slows weight gain in teen girls.

Back on the US News & World rankings: The Mediterranean diet came in second for overall diet, while Jenny Craig and the Raw Food diet were close runners-up for weight loss, Reuters reports. “Our analysis put hard numbers on the common-sense belief that no diet is ideal for everybody,” says the magazine. It all depends on your aim. Click for details on the specific diets and complete rankings.

I'm skeptical of the Dash Diet because my own experience with a diet to stop hypertension was the Beverly Hills Diet (without the pineapple).  Mono meals i.e never eating more than one food item per 4 hour period. Never eat meats with carbs.  It was the only diet that lowered my hypertension.  I've not read the Dash Diet book but from what I've read here mixing of foods is not good for lowering hypertension.

Here's what I did: Cut down to 2,000 calories a day. No red meat, for proteins I use fish and skinless chicken. Instead of milk ( my favorite) I switched over to soy milk, vanilla flavored.  22 supplements a day. List weights every other day, run a minimum of 2 miles in between those days. In the last 8 weeks I have dropped 35 lbs, and regained at least ten years of muscle tissue. No white bread, white rice, or sugar either. And stay the HELL away from trans-fats. Read the labels on the food, they tell all. Anytime you get the urge for cookies, cake, etc., grab an apple, orange, banana, etc. instead.
