That didn't take long: The couple kissing in what is fast becoming an iconic photo from the Vancouver riots has been identified as Scott Jones, a 29-year-old Australia native, and his Canadian girlfriend, Alexandra Thomas. Jones' father explains to the Toronto Star what happened: “She had actually been injured,” he says. "She had been knocked down by a shield” from police. "He lay down next to her to comfort her. She was crying and he just kissed her to calm her down.” (Still, the Stir isn't quite convinced the image wasn't staged to some extent.)

Jones plans to visit California next week and return to Australia, and it's not clear whether Alexandra will be making the trip, says dad. As for kissing in the middle of the street, "It is something he would do, that's our boy," his mother tells an Australian TV station. "He has always lived in his own world, he's special like that. He doesn’t always connect with what going on around him." (More Vancouver riots stories.)
