Judge Admonishes Mom for Spanking Daughter

She gets five years' probation, must attend classes

(Newser) – A mother in Texas who got arrested after spanking her toddler received five years' probation and a stern lecture from the judge this week, reports KZTV. "You don't spank children today," District Court Judge Jose Longoria told Rosalina Gonzales. "In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children. You understand?" Gonzales, who also must attend parenting classes in Corpus Christi and pay a $50 fine to a children's center, responded, "Yes, sir."

Police arrested her on charges of causing injury to a child in December, after the almost-2-year-old girl's grandmother notice red marks on her rear and took her to a hospital to be checked out. Prosecutors described it as "pretty simple, straightforward spanking case," reports WVLT-TV. Gonzales has lost custody of the girl and her two other children, though it's not clear whether the spanking charges figured into that.

Truth be told, Threatening does not work! That is what counting to 3 is, that is what "Time out is" and that is what "The naughty chair" is. If you have a child that gets out of hand every now and again, you don't need to lay a hand on them...you tell them what is wrong and they begin to auto-correct because their personality will allow you, as the parent and an authority figure, to do that. But if you have a Strong Willed Child, that child will not respond to threats, they will not pay any attention to time out, nor will they sit in the naughty chair. Strong willed kids have to be first warned....that means your naughty chair or your time out...and then the second time, they need to be "written the ticket"....that means a punishment that fits what has been done wrong. So I suggests this to you spanking and non-spanking parent and parents that want the Government to tell you what to do with your domestic affairs. If that child will naturally do what you ask and you have mutual respect for each other...give them the warning and that will be all you need...But if that child does not respect you and you have tried many times in issuing the warning...Write that child a ticket and get on with working hard and loving your kids....Because if you don't write them that ticket...someone else in society will...Honestly, spend time with your children and they will respect you and tell you (sometimes indirectly) how you can work them through childhood. The truth...If you don't mind somebody at home...you're gonna mind somebody in jail...all day long! P.S. You should only have to do this between the ages of 3 to 8 years old...after eight...they stop listening anyway. Tones, looks and glares work at our house for one of our kids...the other kid has to be written the ticket after two warnings...

Sounds like crap. I had to swat my little girl on the butt a few times when she was real little, now I can't remember the last time I had to spank her. I never abused her, but there has to be discipline. They will test you to see how far they can go. Freakin liberals

I should add that there isn't much information on the internet.  No details on what the hospital found.  What degree of injury exactly? Maybe she should not have pleaded guilty.  Maybe she didn't realize that she would get five years of felony probation and lose custody of her kids!
