(Newser) – It couldn't have been scripted better: With 2,999 hits under his belt, Derek Jeter homered to left in front of the hometown fans today. Jeter becomes the first player to reach the 3,000-hit mark with the New York Yankees, notes the New York Post. The hit came against the Tampa Bay Rays in his second-at-bat. He had singled earlier in the game. Best part: The fan who caught the ball returned it to the team.
