(Newser) – The Giants continue to struggle to score runs and the Padres continue to excel at preventing them. The Padres' 1-0 win spoiled a brilliant outing by San Francisco’s Matt Cain, who allowed just one hit in seven innings, as the San Diego bullpen extended its season-opening scoreless innings streak to 20 2/3 with two shutout frames in relief of starter Chris Young.

Geoff Blum’s 7th inning sacrifice fly was the difference. The Giant loss also ruined manager Bruce Bochy’s return to San Diego, where he had managed the Padres for 12 seasons. Reliever Cla Meredith delighted the fans by striking Barry Bonds out on three pitches in the 8th. Bonds went 0-for-4, as Giants fell to 1-6.
