Regis Bids Farewell to Live!

(Newser) – It’s Regis Philbin's last day on Live! with Regis and Kelly. He kicked off his farewell last night with a visit to David Letterman’s show (highlights in the gallery) and continued with an hour-long goodbye tribute this morning. Who will Kelly Ripa get to cozy up to next? TV Guide offers up a list of eight possible replacements. A sampling:

Mark Consuelos: First of all, he’s Ripa’s husband. He has also already filled in for Regis, and has hosted his own show. But maybe it's too cutesy a pairing?

Mario Lopez: The Saved By the Bell star has interviewing experience from Extra, and has also hosted America’s Best Dance Crew. But maybe he's too much like Consuelos (read: dimpled, Latin)?
Ralph Macchio: He’s the Karate Kid, but oddly, that’s not the reason TV Guide gives; he has apparently also done well filling in for Regis in the past. Bonus: He already lives in New York.
Betty White: Everyone loves her, and she's hilarious. But is she too old?

(NEWSER) - David Letterman is dead set on repairing his marriage after the infidelity that led to an extortion attempt last year, People reports. Appearing on Live! With Regis and Kelly, Letterman likened the events of last year to "an explosion," saying, "You're looking at the shards and you say, 'Well, can we put this back together?' And by God, maybe you can put it back together. And maybe it won't be the same, but maybe it will be different, and maybe it can even be better in a different way." More»

Retiring talk show host calls book a 'thank-you' to fans

(AP) - Regis Philbin may be exiting the talk show world , but before he (finally) goes, he's leaving his fans with a "personal thank-you" in the form of a memoir, due this fall. Though currently untitled, the book will reflect on his decades-long television career and include stories about Live! With Regis and Kelly co-host Kelly Ripa, her predecessor Kathie Lee Gifford, and such celebrities as Jack Nicholson, George Clooney, and Jerry Seinfeld, according to the publisher. More»

(NEWSER) - After 28 years as host, Regis Philbin is signing off. The talk-show veteran announced his retirement from Live With Regis and Kelly at the beginning of today’s show, the AP reports. "It's been a long time,” he said, “and it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to New York, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days.” But alas, “there is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera—especially certain old people,” joked the 79-year-old.
