(Newser) – The Saudi woman who made international headlines by driving in a YouTube video survived the car crash that was widely reported to have killed her, reports the Guardian. Media reports had said Manal al-Sherif died instantly, but Sherif tells the Guardian that it was instead an unnamed female companion who died in the wreck. It's not clear who was driving. Sherif was detained for 10 days last year following the video; she was reportedly released early after signing a document saying she would stop driving.

It's completely possible that this was just an accident. Driving in Saudi Arabia is notoriously dangerous and the government doesn't allow women to openly practice or take classes. But my first instinct was that someone was trying to take her out. And if that's the case, then it's fucking disgusting.

This story is WRONG.  The story that this article links to does not say that MANAL AL-SHARIF is dead, although misleadingly they show her photo.  RETRACT THIS ARTICLE IMMEDIATELY as Manal Al-Sharif is NOT dead.  Get your facts right Newser.  I turn to this news outlet frequently, but am very disappointed that a mistake like this can get through and get published...Sad.
