Young Adults Put Life on Hold Over Economy

But most remain upbeat about their future: Pew survey

(Newser) – The economy is doing a number on those aged 18 to 34, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center:

  • Half say they have taken a job they didn't want.
  • More than a third have gone back to school because of the job market.
  • Nearly a quarter have taken unpaid work to gain experience.
  • About a quarter have moved back in with the folks.
  • More than 1 in 5 have postponed having a baby, and about the same number have put off getting married.

Despite all that, nine in 10 say they make enough money now to lead the life they want or anticipate doing so in the future, notes the Los Angeles Times. "We don't know if that's grounded in anything, but that response was one of the things we thought was so interesting," says a Pew researcher. "In spite of all the challenges they're facing, they're still really optimistic about their future."

The generation of misery if you mean the Republicans saying no to Obama like little children and yes there is a  group of people that are being paid to say no just so Obama can go in history as one of the presidents who failed.  Misery will continue until these children that are being paid a TON of our OWN MONEY are brought to justice.  There is no justice to what the Republican party is doing to this country.  And Justice for All...my rump. A clean sweep of congress, It made no sense to have almost the same Congress as we did with Bush as we do with Obama.  Really? Republicans continue to screw over the good of all.  I REFUSE to vote for anyone who has 5 houses and has the nerve to say, oh yeah we can relate to you? You can really relate to the 99%. VOTE DEMOCRAT.  I will continue to vote democrat until the day I die.  I can't stand ignorance, empty promises, and lies...if you want that vote republican.  And yes I do blame the Republicans, they have no clue what America is all about and how you can deride your fellow Americans for THEIR OWN PERSONAL GAIN is beyond me! I'm sorry young adults, but a few select people are bullying others for their own personal gain! That is why your flipping burgers at burger king.

Thank Obama for this economy.  And by all means, vote Obama if you want another generation of misery.

i think financial aid lenders should provide some sort of service advising how to properly/strategically seek  employment in those tough post-grad years, or at least provide examples (real-life stories) of avenues one can take to ease the financial hole many of us enter 6 months after college. Instead they just want to bury you immediately. The loan letters come, the stress begins, and this uneasiness manifests not only in one's psyche but also can affect other aspects of life. Just because successful business means 'meeting the bottom line' does not mean a lender can't also provide the moral guidance and reassurance which projects that, yes, we ALL have a stake in OUR present and future economic prosperity.
