Bush: Drugs 'Sullied' Baseball

(Newser) – Major League Baseball must take the Mitchell report seriously and put the era of steroids behind it, President Bush said today. The president, a former part-owner of the Texas Rangers, cautioned against a rush to judgment of the 85 players accused of doping in the report. “We can jump to this conclusion,” he said: “That steroids have sullied the game.”

“My hope is that this report is a part of putting the steroid era of baseball behind us,” said Bush, who added he was “confident” that owners and players would respond appropriately. “I just urge those in the public spotlight, particularly athletes, to understand that when they violate their bodies, they’re sending a terrible signal to America’s youth.”

He easily beat out Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto.

    The Philadelphia Phillies edged Tampa Bay 4-3 tonight to capture the team's first World Series pennant since 1980. Pedro Feliz singled home Eric Bruntlett in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and provide the winning run, the Tampa Bay Tribune reports. The two teams had to resume the game in the sixth inning tonight after it was halted because of rain Monday night.
