Effing Pro-Choice T-Shirt Keeps Flier Off Plane

Captain orders woman to change before connecting flight

(Newser) – A woman missed an American Airlines connecting flight because she was wearing a pro-choice T-shirt with an obscenity about what she might do to a senator. The captain of a flight the woman was exiting scolded her over the shirt that read: “If I wanted the government in my womb, I’d f--- a senator,” and said she would have to change before boarding her next flight. “This conversation led to me missing my connecting flight," the passenger told RH Reality Check. Her abortion stand had nothing to do with the captain's response, according to an American Airlines spokesman. “The only reason she was asked to cover up her T-shirt was the appearance of the F-word on the T-shirt," he explained. "The outcome would have been exactly the same had the message been anti-abortion.”

American's "contract of carriage" states that the airline can bounce passengers if they're "clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offense to others"—though that's widely open to interpretation. "The irony is that she went through several layers of personnel and was allowed to fly," one attorney told MSNBC. But another travel attorney points out that it's ultimately up to the captain. "If he thinks other passengers may get upset, it becomes a safety issue," he added. The woman boarded a later flight, wearing a shawl to cover the shirt.

This is the T-shirt that landed a female passenger in hot water.

Hey...with all the types of people(personalities)that travel on planes...that captain was right in this case...because the F word is offensive to many people!!Oh...and so is being Pro-Choice!!And for the F word...There could be kids on the plane of course...but even if it didn't offend anyone....the airline company or the captain have the right to say they don't want your business...this women deserved it...why...because she knew damn well that shirt is a bit much...especially for a trip on a plane with many other people!! If you want to wear a shirt like that...do it somewhere no one can tell you to change it...like they can at any kind of business...store, restaurant,airline...get where this is going?!! If you don't want to be bothered about what you are wearing...watch where you wear it!!!Only common sense!!She wanted this...easy way to make money!!Even I know...that if I wanted an airline to kick me off...or refuse me...to the point I look innocent...then use something in your favor...speech that causes controversy!!Like her shirt does!!All she needs to do is use the freedom of speech card...Simple!She knew what she was doing...I don't feel bad for people like her!!!Besides...if she didn't want to offend anyone...she would have had no problem changing the shirt in the first place!!Dumb women!!

Furthermore, every type of clothing is going to offend someone. Ultra-Orthodox Jews are offended by women in short sleeves and skirts-will they now be banned? Some Muslims are offended by women that aren't completely covered-will burqas now be required? What about certain colors that may be found offensive (Sharon Angle bullied a school football team over their black jerseys).  If "may be offensive to some" is the standard by which American judges who to allow to board, then they have created a very slippery slope, which will likely land them on their butts if taken to court.

Clearly a violation of this traveler's free speech rights. Obscene language is protected speech. AA's case is further weakened by the fact she was allowed to board the first leg of her trip with no problem-did the language suddenly become offensive in mid-flight? I say the lady should sue for damages, it should be a slam-dunk case. I see "offensive" shirts all the time and just ignore them. .
