Antarctica Expeditioner Needs Rescue ... in the Dark

Must be evacuated despite lack of daylight

(Newser) – This week, an emergency crew will fly to Antarctica to evacuate an expeditioner—in the dark. A medical emergency is under way involving someone at McMurdo Station, Antarctica's largest research station; the victim is believed to be a US citizen and is currently in stable condition. But the timing is bad, since it's currently winter in Antarctica—which means no daylight for six months, although there is "some twilight at midday," according to a spokesperson for the US National Science Foundation, which oversees McMurdo. The station is the US Antarctic Program's hub, CNN reports.

Just because it is winter in Antarctica does not mean it is dark 24 hours a day for 6 months. The day and night lengths change gradually throughout the year between the summer and winter solstices.

Trees in Antarctica?  It's possible if the earth axis tilted at a different angle.  That phenomenon explains fossil fuels buried at dry or cold localities.  Don't panic if you see glaciers and antarctic ice packs shrinking.  Instead, get out and plant some trees on a wet surface which should be well primed to grow a forest.  Then the forest will absorb carbon dioxide which will reduce global warming.  I am doing my part by growing a loblolly pine off my back deck and more beyond the back fence.  Are you doing your part by growing trees, or are you trying to survive in a sterile, paved setting?
