Coming Soon: Caffeinated Cracker Jacks Called Cracker Jack'd, of course By John Johnson, Newser Staff Posted Nov 15, 2012 6:03 PM CST Updated Nov 18, 2012 8:57 AM CST 23 comments Comments (Frito-Lay) (Newser) – Because the world needs one more caffeinated product: The maker of Cracker Jacks will be rolling out a Cracker Jack'd line that includes two varieties with coffee as an ingredient, reports Advertising Age. Each 2-ounce serving will have 70mg of caffeine, which is in the ballpark (on the low side) for a typical cup of coffee. A spokesman for PepsiCo's Frito-Lay says the caffeinated "Power Bites" won't be marketed to children, though the Huffington Post points out that brand mascots Sailor Joe and dog Bingo are on the packaging. The nutrition group Center for Science in the Public Interest already is going after the product. "Boxes of Cracker Jack are famous for having a toy surprise inside," it says in a statement. "But what parent suspects that Cracker Jack might come with a surprising dose of a mildly addictive stimulant drug?" The FDA, meanwhile, is investigating 13 deaths that might be linked to the caffeinated 5-Hour Energy product.
