Saturday Night Live shelved the jokes for last night's Cold Open, opting instead to let the kids do the talking in the wake of Friday's Connecticut school shooting: The show opened with the voices of the New York Children's Chorus singing "Silent Night" without accompaniment, reports Deadspin. After the kids closed out the song, they shouted the obligatory, "Live from New York, it's Saturday night!" But it was far from the only tribute out there last night and this morning:
- The New York Times ran a simple list of the victims' names as its main front-page art this morning. Here's an image.
- As the Rolling Stones rocked out with Bruce Springsteen and Lady Gaga on the final show of their 50th anniversary tour, Mick Jagger paid tribute to Newtown's loss, reports the AP: "We just wanted to send our love and condolences to all the people who lost loved ones in the tragedy in Connecticut," he said, adding that the world shared America's shock.
- Fox is yanking new episodes of Family Guy and American Dad tonight to avoid airing content that might be sensitive in the wake of the shootings, notes Huffington Post.
- And Pope Benedict XVI touched on the tragedy in this morning's mass in St. Peter's Square, notes Reuters. "I was deeply saddened by Friday's senseless violence in Newtown, Connecticut. I assure the families of the victims, especially those who lost a child, of my closeness in prayer. May the God of consolation touch their hearts and ease their pain."
