(Newser) – It looks like Hillary Clinton will ring in 2013 in a New York hospital, where she was admitted yesterday after the discovery of a blood clot. That clot is related to the concussion she suffered in mid-December, and was identified during a follow-up exam yesterday, according to her spokesman. He would not reveal the location of the clot, but said Clinton was being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for at least 48 hours for monitoring, reports the AP.

USA Today speaks with a cardiologist unaffiliated with Clinton's care who explains that the concussion itself didn't cause the clot—the bed rest she was likely prescribed after her fall is most likely to blame. "When you're not moving around, you don't have as much circulation in your lower extremities, and the blood sits around in your legs longer than usual," he says. Clots located in the legs can be easily treated; but untreated, they can break off from the blood vessel, enter the bloodstream, and journey to the lung, where they can kill.
