(Newser) – New Maine legislation keeps the identities of those with concealed-carry permits under wraps—at least for now. Both houses of the state legislature easily passed the emergency measure, signed by Republican Gov. Paul LePage yesterday, after the Bangor Daily News last week requested data on permit holders and "a little-known Florida man" did the same, the Portland Press Herald reports. It's the first time since 2003 that a bill has sought to protect permit holders' identities.

While the state's Senate Republican leader called the move a "common-sense measure," others suggested political motives. "This is not an emergency, this is a political emergency," said a state House Democrat. (The legislation was actually sponsored by two Democrats.) The identity-shielding measure will be in effect until April 30, USA Today notes, which lawmakers say gives them time to debate a permanent ban on releasing IDs under the state's Freedom of Access Act. The move follows controversy over a New York newspaper's publishing of a gun-owner map.

Actually the entire concept of a carry permit is laughable, nobody gets to permit me the right to defend myself.

Trust me...this issue aside...this guy is a wacko! I am a citizen of beautiful Maine, he was elected with 35% of the vote because of vote siphoning from the independent runner. He rode the "tea party " wave in...yes, the BGDN petitioned to release the names of concealed carry permit holders, and the paper dropped the petition when it became apparent that it was a worry to the parties involved. This clown then posed for the above photo. He has consistently showed his lack of character, breeding, manners...ah what else can I say...he is such a loser! Newser..take a look at some of his antics, including telling the NAACP to "kiss my butt", walking out of meetings then storming back in to swear at the attendees..real class act! The bottom line is, the News rescinded the permit seeking info, however another group, apparently unknown , has petitioned too...hmm, wonder who or what those fine folks will do with it!

The only people who need to know if someone owns a firearm or has a carry and conceal permit are law enforcement and government agencies. You don't need to know, I don't need to know, the Bangor Daily News doesn't need to know. I am so sick of people just wanting to call these LEGAL gun owners out. What is this first grade? "Teacher! Timmy wiped his nose on his sleeve again!"
