(Newser) – Two ominous developments in Syria overnight:

  • Israel airstrike: Israel bombed a site within Syria for the second time this year, reports Reuters. Official details are scarce, but the Israeli strike reportedly hit a warehouse that contained high-tech missiles, though not chemical weapons. Israeli officials feared that Bashar al-Assad was sending them to Hezbollah in Lebanon, reports AP.
  • Residents fleeing: The BBC reports that hundreds of Syrians have fled coastal areas amid unconfirmed accounts of at least two massacres by pro-government militia members. A BBC correspondent says videos, which haven't been verified, show corpses including women and children in the villages of al-Bayda and Baniya. Opposition groups allege that a campaign of "sectarian cleansing" is underway to set up a safe haven for members of the minority Alawite sect, of which Assad is a member.

That Frontline piece was showing how the frustrated young fighters against Assad are becoming radicalized & talking about joining up with Al Qaeda to get rid of the bastard. Problem is, Assad is armed with chemical weapons, nerve gas & an arsenal of weapons, tanks & military aircraft supplied by Russia. Israeli intelligence is aware of which way the situation is drifting. If Assad is overthrown maybe Hezbollah gets some nice chemical or nerve gas weapons they can use against Israel. If Al Qaeda gets in there the situation is as bad or worse. As little as they like Sunni Muslims, the Shia Muslims hate them as bad or worse then the Sunnis. No win situation for them there. There really isn't an 'enemy-of-my-enemy' they can do business with in Syria. What a mess.
