(Newser) – A security guard on the lookout for shoplifters at a Manhattan Victoria's Secret ended up making the most gruesome of finds yesterday afternoon: what appeared to be a fetus in a plastic bag, police say. The New York Daily News reports that the guard spotted two 17-year-old girls swiping underwear and called police; a strong odor was observed, and the remains were found. Tiona Rodriguez reportedly told police she had had a miscarriage the previous day, but didn't know what to do with the remains; she was hospitalized.

It wasn't clear whether the fetus was alive or dead when delivered. One source tells the Daily News Rodriguez was 6.5 months along, but another describes her as "nearly full-term." The medical examiner's office is performing an autopsy on the apparent human remains, reports the AP, and the girls have been charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Police are searching both their homes. The Daily News adds that Rodriguez made this Facebook post on Wednesday: "These Cramps, SON."

wow. so many hateful judgmental comments. blows my mind. you can't possibly put yourself in this girls position--shes hiding a pregnancy, miscarries, and doesnt know what she should do. of course she doesnt know what she should do. shes 17. shes a kid. she just delivered a dead baby. how does this make her and her friend 'monsters' or 'sociopaths'? keep your hateful comments to yourself please, show a little decency and compassion.

It was a cop's opinion that the baby was born alive. Since cops are not experts in that area, I say people should wait to hate. Women who intentionally abort a pregnancy do not carry the fetus around with them in a shopping bag. I think we're going to find out that she had a miscarriage and didn't know what she should do with the fetus. If she didn't care about the fetus, she would have thrown its body in the nearest dumpster. You hear about that happening all the time.
