A gunman opened fire tonight at a city council meeting in suburban St. Louis, killing five people before being shot to death by police, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Two others were wounded, one of them critically. Police said the man killed an officer outside City Hall, then entered the building and council chambers, where he shot the others.

"He came from the back of the room," said a witness. "He kept yelling ‘shoot the mayor’ and he just walked around shooting anybody he could." The mayor was one of the two people wounded. No motive was known, but the gunman had a long history of angry exchanges at council meetings, the Post-Dispatch notes. (More St. Louis stories.)
