(Newser) – Even those who prefer dogs over cats will have to give it up for the cat on this one. In video from Bakersfield, California, a 4-year-old boy is getting bitten and dragged by a neighbor's dog when the family cat streaks in out of nowhere and saves the day. "Tara is my hero," says the boy, who has mild autism. He needed a few stitches on his leg but is otherwise fine. Jezebel, meanwhile, has anointed Tara "the world's most awesome cat." One down note is that police say the dog will be quarantined for 10 days and then euthanized, reports 23ABC.

My two female wonder cats for a decade, Dusty the dilute tortoiseshell, and Domino the Manx, who normally hated each other, automatically teamed up for two reasons over the years: 1) to terrorize chipmunks (so much that I could walk over and pick the poor things up, cowering in the grass), and 2) to instantly chase dogs of all sizes out of the yard. The absence of dog poo yard mines alone made these two worth their weight in gold. Their payment for services included, other than a spoon of wet food and a bowl of dry, was a) a percentage of our extra sharp cheddar cheese, b) the inside greasy ring of our peanut donuts, and c) all of the salmon and lamb they could get, whether or not we were aware of their plot :).
