(Newser) – An 8-year-old boy who was lying in bed died after a bullet fired from outside went through a home's wall and hit him, Detroit police said. The child was struck about 1:15am today at his east side home and was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said. The boy's name wasn't released by police, but the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press identify him as Jakari Pearson. His mother was also hospitalized, WWJ-AM reports.

Neighbors told WWJ-AM they heard about five shots. Several bullet holes were visible in the bricks and a window of an upstairs bedroom at the home. A superhero-themed bed sheet was on the porch. Beatrice Spears, who lives nearby, left a teddy bear on the porch next to the sheet. "Hearing the gunshots and I heard his mother screaming, so I ran around here," Spears told the News. "Seen him in the middle of the street, and I seen his mother in the middle of the street, also." Police Sgt. Michael Woody said investigators have a "good idea" of who they're looking for and are working to track that person down.

When you can't be safe sleeping in your own home, where will you be safe? This innocent little boy barely started his life, this is so sad. May you rest in peace little one.

32 human beings died in Detroit in 15 days. In the same time period 140 gun crimes were committed. How is this not a war zone. If this were happening in some God forsaken hellhole over seas the media would be all over it but because it happens here no one cares. Now this little boy will never be anything but a memory and still no one cares, all you hear is race race race, white people this, and black people that, and still no body cares. A white man shoots a black boy and it's all you hear for months, no one out side of Detroit is going to hear another thing about this little boy. Doesn't he deserve some outrage? Doesn't he deserve to be national news. WTF is wrong with this world?

Bullets go through brick walls? I better reenforce the walls with layers of steel.
