A brutal murder out of the Bronx: Authorities say a woman killed a 22-year-old who was nearly nine months pregnant and then "surgically removed" her baby, reports the Daily News. Incredibly, the baby survived and is now hospitalized, and a suspect is in custody, reports NBC New York. The killing took place Friday afternoon in the apartment of suspect Ashleigh Wade. When police arrived after receiving a call about an argument turning physical, they discovered that Angelikque Sutton had been strangled and stabbed multiple times in the stomach, reports AP.

Wade then tried to claim that the baby was hers, city councilman Andy King tells NBC. "When the cops arrived, the perp claimed it was her child and that she gave birth during the struggle," he says. It remains unclear what set off the argument that led to the killing. A relative of the victim tells the Daily News that the women knew each other from school. “Ashleigh called her to rekindle the friendship and then she did this,” says an aunt. (More murder stories.)
