PETA Goes After NYC Carriages

Animal-rights activist calls the trade 'disgusting'

(Newser) – Animal-rights activists have long been champing at the bit to ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City, and a PETA publicity strongman is in town to do just that, New York magazine reports. Though Michael Bloomberg and others in City Hall support the trade, PETA's Dan Mathews—legendary for his anti-fur tactics—has been crusading to ramp up attention since a Queens councilman proposed a ban in December.

Mathews has taken his message to the front lines, lambasting carriage drivers in Central Park for their "disgusting” trade and deriding the animals' “shackles.” He's also recruiting celebrities such as Alec Baldwin and Cheryl Hines along the way. In recent years, spooked horses have caused a handful of traffic accidents, the magazine notes, and stable conditions are reportedly cramped. The carriage business supports some 450 jobs.

(NEWSER) - New York’s city council took a stand yesterday for some of the city’s most put-upon, working-class schlubs: the horses who schlep carriages through Central Park. From now on, those unfortunate beasts are entitled to five weeks of vacation outside the city every year, the New York Post reports. Their drivers got a little something, too; they can now charge $50 for the first 20 minutes of the ride, up from the previous $34 for 30 minutes. More»

(NEWSER) - A Big Apple a day might help keep the Grim Reaper away: Newborn New Yorkers can now expect to live a lot longer than the average American, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says. At 80.6, the city's life expectancy—which was long well below the national average—is up almost three years from 2000 rates and is more than two years above the national rate of 78.2 years. When compared to states, New York City's life expectancy is now lower than only those of Hawaii and Minnesota. More»

PETA Sees Benefit to US Horse Slaughter

It's better than exporting them, group says

(NEWSER) - Congress’ new spending bill ending an effective ban on domestic horse slaughter may sound like a custom-made PETA target—but actually, the group sees some good in the change, the Los Angeles Times reports. Activists say it’s better to allow the slaughter of horses inside the US than to export them for slaughter. “To reduce suffering, there should be a ban on the export of live horses, even if that means opening slaughterhouses in the US again,” the group says in a statement. 'Lone wolf' Jose Pimentel was 'hour away' from finishing first bomb: Cops

(NEWSER) - A suspected lone wolf terrorist has been charged with plotting to kill US soldiers and police with bombs he was building in his Manhattan apartment, according to law enforcement authorities. Jose Pimentel, 27, who goes by the name Muhammad Yusuf, intended to test three bombs in mailboxes before using explosives on soldiers returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, said New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly at a press conference yesterday. He also planned to target NYPD cruisers, postal facilities, and a New Jersey police station, said Kelly. Pimentel allegedly told an informant that the bombings would show the public “there was mujahedeen in the city ready to wage Jihad," reports the New York Daily News. More»
