(Newser) – A generous rent surprise and lifesaving advice from a boss make the list:

  • Anonymous Donor Covers Entire Complex's Rent: The residents of a 38-unit apartment complex in Newpark, Utah, got an expected gift this month. An anonymous donor covered the entire complex's January rent, which totaled about $25,000. For most residents, it's a very big deal.
  • Boss' Concern Saves Worker's Life: Sales manager Mike Bell showed up for work as usual one day at a Dallas-area car dealership, but his boss didn't think he looked well and suggested he go to the doctor instead. It ended up being lifesaving advice—and a tooth infection was at the heart of the problem.
  • Barking Dog Saves a Pal: Police in Massachusetts say a dog approached an officer barking frantically and then led the officer across a field and down an icy, 30-foot embankment, where the dog's canine companion had become entangled in the undergrowth. A rescue followed, as well the perfect "Lassie" quote from police.

  • Burglars Confess After Someone Else Arrested: Most burglars would be thrilled to know they got away with their crime. Apparently, not this pair: Two UK men confessed to stealing $87,500 worth of beauty products and equipment from a UK salon. Why? Their lawyer says they felt too guilty when someone else was wrongfully arrested for their crime, suggesting that one well-worn cliche about thieves has some truth to it.
  • Bar's Response to NYE Complaint Goes Viral: When a woman suffered a heart attack at an Indianapolis bar on New Year's Eve, another customer ranted on Facebook about the delays and inconvenience that ensued. The bar's spirited response became an Internet smash.
