"That was not the easiest entrance I've ever made," Donald Trump told a Republican convention in a hotel near San Francisco's airport Friday after protesters forced him to abandon his motorcade and go through the Hyatt's rear entrance. "It felt like I was crossing the border," quipped Trump, who was surrounded by Secret Service agents as he climbed over a concrete barrier by the 101 Freeway, the Los Angeles Times reports. "They're going to take me under a fence and through a field," he said at the end of his appearance. "You wouldn't believe the route they have planned to get me out of here."

Hundreds of demonstrators pushed to the front doors of the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame before being moved back by police in riot gear, the AP reports. Some protesters infiltrated the hotel building and hung a giant banner reading, "Stop Hate." During his speech, Trump told the assembled Republicans that it is time for the party to unite behind him, though he also slammed party figures who oppose him, including "stupidest man on Earth" Karl Rove. Hours later, John Kasich framed the chaos as a warning sign to his party. "Did you see what happened today?" he said during a news conference. "People chaining themselves to a fence. Do you see what's happening?" He spoke to the convention Friday evening; Ted Cruz and Carly Fiorina will address it on Saturday. (There was chaos outside a Trump rally in Orange County Thursday night.)
