Lady Huskies Mess With Texas to Advance

Posted Mar 26, 08 2:39 AM CDT in Sports

(Newser) – The University of Connecticut women breezed to an easy 89-55 victory over Texas to advance to the NCAA tournament's Sweet Sixteen round, thanks largely to Maya Moore and her 24 points. Scoring 16 of those within eight minutes, Moore also shone on defense with spectacular shot blocking, reports the Hartford Courant. Elsewhere in the tournament:

  • The Corn Huskers trailed Maryland by as many as 15 points in the first half, but came back to tie it with 14 minutes to go before the top-seeded team surged back for a 76-64 win.
  • A third No. 1 seed advanced as Georgia saw a brief lead but allowed North Carolina to go 12-0 before the break, and continue on to win 80-66.
